Its a rough decription of non-exact closeness. As an example.. My Mom got nervous that I might damage something when I placed a cup in close proximity to my computer. Derived from "proximate" or "near." Very often misused in sentences as above by saying that a cup was placed close near a computer would be better said "...when I placed a cup too close to my computer." "Close proximity" in a phrase is somewhat redundant and superfluous because "close" implies "near" as well.
My own house was an eyesore, but it was a small eyesore, and it had been overlooked, so I had a view of the water, a partial view of my neighbor's lawn, and the consoling proximity of millionaires--all for eighty dollars a month.

Proximity means closeness, the state of being proximate. It is a redundancy to use the phrase, "close proximity." I see it all the time used by supposedly literate people, and others not so. It galls me to see the language misused that way. I'm on a campaign to see it properly used.

Proximity searching is a way to define what results you see. It lets you use a specific key word to then narrow down your results.

It is OK to use close vicinity but the phrase is a little redundant and there are better ways to express proximity to. Use, "near, next to, adjacent to, in the vicinity of", etc. Set up your phrase like this: In the vicinity of the shopping mall, close to the entrance. I will meet you there. Better sentence structure and proper that way.
