a business degree is only a guide. it's no guarantee for a great job and certainly no guarantee that you will make lots of money when your finished. having said that, you still need it. I've seen many qualified people with untold accomplishments get the door closed b\c they don't have a business degree. it's what validates people many times. as unfair as it is it's a fact of life. to answer your question more specifically though, try to learn as much as possible when your in a scholastic setting, it's surprising what you can learn if you listen and work hard. example, get a finance or accounting degree and many doors will be opened, but in your spare time, grab a marketing book or economics book (eg.) "Economic systems of the World", and learn all that you can while your there. Your Career services at any local university will be your access to good jobs. While you have a full time job, try alternate business ventures here and there to make supplemental income, if one of them works you can do it full time. Most importantly, you business degree should teach you "business", what works and what doesn't. Find out what people want to buy and sell them all you can, "Make hay while the sun shines". Hope this is start.

This is an admonition for those who (1) have a business degree and are getting ready to try to use it and (2) are thinking about getting one. A general business degree is not as useful to employers in today's market as you might think. The problem is that, in reality, to the average company owner or CEO, you having a business degree doesn't do them any good. You don't know any more, you still have no clue as to the practical aspects of business, and they still have to teach you everything... except now, they have to pay you more because you have a business degree. So, in many circumstances, a business degree can actually make you lessattrative to many employers. They would much rather find a bright employee with a promising future, train him, and then pay for his education if they feel it would be beneficial.

ANSWER:

If you want an upwardly mobile job, go back and get a fine arts degree, and you will find yourself in a position where you are hiring the people with business degrees. Fine arts degrees produce a more well rounded education than business degrees and most business owners are aware of this fact combined with the fact that most successful business owners don't have business degrees. Start your own business and get a P.H.D. from the school of hard knocks.
