The family is the first major agent of socialization for most individuals. They help children to internalize culture and develop a social identity. They also provide an ascribed social status to its young members, and play a key part in early sex-rol socialization. It can also go in the opposite direction, the child will usually socialize its family mebers by getting them used to their routines and will create signals for their needs.
Socialization is important because different societies help each individual define who they are. Also, socialization allows a number of opportunities for the individual to network, seek assistance in times of need as well as have that necessary sense of belonging within a community for moral support.
The primary socialization is during the formative phase in infancy to interact with the immediate social group in age upto the adolescent age.The secondary socialization is in the beginning of youth age to interact beyond its social group or community. The Tertiary socialization is one that is concerned with the development of identity in maturity the 'adult-old' phase (50-70 yrs) and in the 'old old' phase (75 onwards).
