One way is to hold the canary on its back (as in, hold the canary in the palm of your hand where its tummy is facing towards you) and blow lightly/gently near its private area. If you see a small thing sticking up, then it's obviously a male. If you don't see one, then it's a female. Sometimes, however, it may be difficult to see what you want to see/find.
You can not go by singing because females can mimic males.
When the canary is still in its nest and the feathers have just come in, and their wings still look like sticks, tap the nest with your finger, (not the chicks) and the females will pop their heads up and look at you, and the males will stick their heads down and their behinds up at you.
When the canary is an adult it is a little harder to tell but the only way I know of is if the canary sings, its usually a male, and of coarse, the female will lay an egg.
A male canary has a voice that can sing in a nice tempo a female cannot sing.
Male birds cannot lay eggs.
Canaries do knock eggs out of their nest. This is done sometimes if the bird knows the egg is not thriving. Eggs may be knocked out of nest by predators to the canary bird also.
You have a birds and an egg instead of just a bird. If you mean, will it be fertile, the record for longevity of sperm in birds is 6 weeks in a canary.
The movie "Emanon" was released in 1987. It is about a boy that travels around with a bird and an egg.
The simplest food is commercial canary egg-biscuit food (from a pet store), and canary mix - you can help the bird a little by soaking some in hot water for a few hours.

As far as any one can tell, the smallest bird egg in the world was laid on October 5, 1998 by a posture canary of the German Crested variety. The tiny egg measured .275 inches in length or 7 mm, was .2 inches in diameter or 5.25 mm, and only weighed .0009 ounces or .027 g.The proud owner of the bird and the smallest bird egg is M.J. Rijck who calls Heijen, the Netherlands home.
The female

yes, because it has grown into a bird in the egg
One of the most important treats you can give your canary is...Boiled EggWhether it's a chicken egg or canary egg.Egg is a great supply of protein which wild canaries get from insects.Boiled egg is a huge part of canary feeding for canary breeders. The protein is super-important for canary egg production and as a soft food for baby canaries. It's also important for canaries that are not breeding. Protein supplies the muscle with amino acids which keep the muscles strong and healthy.Boil the egg for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the shell...or not...I like to offer the shell separately so the canary can choose which one he eats.MASH it up and put about a teaspoon in his treat dish. (Let it cool down first.) Don't let the egg sit in the cage more than 4 or 5 hours. All kinds of nasty bacteria and such like to grow on eggs and can make your canary sick. Twice a week will give your canary a good amount of protein in his canary feeding program.
