Whales can dive deep in to the sea (over 1500 ft or more but they usually swim below the surface Every time they want to breath they surface and take a breath and dive say to about 100 ft It all varies what they are up to
They do not live underwater- they are like whales and dolphins, marine mammals. They do dive, and can do so for about 30mins, but swim close to the surface so they can breathe regularly.
Narwhals prefer to be near the surface, but can dive as deep as 5,000 feet.
A depth of 4,500 feet/1,500 meters is the furthest down that a narwhal can live. But that depth only can be tolerated for 20-25 minutes at a time. That depth also is reached only in pursuit of narwhal prey of the lower, midnight zone of the Arctic and North Atlantic ocean waters. Typically, a narwhal favors the sunlit waters of the upper zone that goes down 600 feet/200 meters from the ocean surface.
a narwhal lives in the sea by Canada (Atlantic), and by Scandinavia.

A narwhal can live up to 90 years but it's much shorter then that in captivity.
