Best Answer

Two miles.

The deeper you go, the hotter it gets. Away from tectonic plate boundaries, it is about 25°C per km of depth (1°F per 70 feet of depth) in most of the world, so four km deep the temperature is around 100°C, which is good for producing steam.

What limits the use of geothermal energy?

there are a few places where magma come close to earths surface. Very expensive deep wells must be drilled to tap this energy.

What is geothermal energy derived from?

Geothermal energy comes from heat stored within the earth. This can involve pumping water deep into drilled holes to produce hot water or perhaps steam. This heat can be converted to other useful forms of energy to do work.

How important will geothermal energy be in the future?

It is difficult to say. There are many forms of renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro, tidal and wave, geothermal among others) and some are easier to set up than geothermal. A geothermal power plant requires two shafts drilled deep into the earth to get hot water and steam for the plant, and wind and solar may be an easier answer for the future.

How does a geothermal power plant get energy?

A geothermal power plant gets energy from the heat deep below the surface of the earth. Shafts are drilled down, often as deep as several kilometres, one to pump water down to the hot rocks, and another nearby which will allow the heated water (or steam) to rise up. This steam is then used to spin electricity turbines to generate electricity.

Drilled the first oil well in Pennsylvania?

The first oil wells were drilled in China in 347 A.D. using bamboo poles. In Persia hand dug wells reached depths of 115 feet in 1594. The first modern well was drilled in Russia in 1848, and in 1859 Colonel Edwin Drake drilled the first US oil well for commercial oil production, at Titusville, PA; it was 69 feet deep.
