The South thought that Lincoln would free all of the slaves, and that is what the Southern economy relied on. The election of Lincoln in 1864 also saw the election of new, mainly abolitionist members of Congress, and many Southern states had already moved toward secession from the Union.

Because it brought matters to a head. Everyone knew that Lincoln would not allow any new slave-states. That was why South Carolina led the way in breaking away from the United States.

He was elected on a ticket of no new slave-states. So the South was doomed to be outvoted in Congress.
