Andrew Jackson was nicknamed Old Hickory after the Hickory tree which produced very tough wood. Jackson was tough like the wood. His men nicknamed Old Hickory when he marched them from Natchez Mississippi back to Tennessee around 1815. Jackson became an American Hero for his defeat of the British in the Battles of New Orleans, January 8 1815. He went on to become the 7th president of the United States. He also appears on the $20 dollar bill!

Old Hickory is definitely a suitable name for Andrew Jackson. Hickory is a plant that is very strong and tough; it represdents Andrew Jackson, because he was tough too. :) Andrew Jackson was an orphan, and he survived smallpox. He also had a bullet stuck in his chest, because the wound was too close to his heart too perform surgery. But.... he survived that too. Andrew Jackson was a strong man
