the Athens lost the peloponnesian war because Sparta had a bigger army on land and the Athens had a bigger navy. The geograpy was a great disadvantage in the war for the Athens because they couldn't use their navy on land.

In the latter stages of the war its subject city states either left it or waere capturred by the Spartan league. Athens' fleet - the instrument of its power - was captured in 404 BCE, the city invested and surrendered. It had no means of controlling other states, and importantly collecting the tribute which enabled it to keep a powerful navy.
