Bruce Springsteen got the nickname 'The Boss' when he was much younger and playing gigs with a band in the 1960s. It was his job to collect the money from these gigs and distribute the money with this band members. The nickname stuck although Springsteen disliked the nickname but has since come to terms with it.
After club shows when the band was getting paid cash in the early 1970s, Bruce was always sent to collect the money. This got him the nickname "the Boss" from band members, a name that eventually spilled over into use by into promotor circles, managers, personal assistants, and then collectively as his nickname by fans and rock critics following the success of Born to Run in 1975.
In the late 1960s, Springsteen performed briefly in a power trio known as Earth, playing in clubs in New Jersey. Springsteen acquired the nickname "The Boss" during this period as when he played club gigs with a band he took on the task of collecting the band's nightly pay and distributing it amongst his bandmates.
Springsteen is not fond of this nickname, due to his dislike of bosses,
but seems to have since given it a tacit acceptance.
Allegedly, he earned the nickname The Boss while performing with a trio called Earth in the late 60's. It is said he never liked the name because of his disdain for bosses, in general.
Cause he was the leader of the band.
