The reason scientists call dogs Canis Familiaris is because Canis is Greek (I believe) for canine which is also know as a dog. And Familiaris ,also Greek, means familiar. So the full translation is pretty much Familiar Canine. And if you don't understand that it means Familiar Canine as in the breed we are familiar with A.K.A. a dog. As for the name Lupis that is also Greek, I'm not 100% sure but I think it means wild. This reffers to Wolves.
