Carl Jung contributed profiles of personality types that categorized people on three levels:

1) How our energy flows: Extrovert vs. Introvert

2) How we acquire information: Sensing vs. Intuitive

3) How we make decisions: Thinking vs. Feeling

With this he defined 8 personality types:

1) Extroverted thinking

2) Extroverted feeling

3) Introverted thinking

4) Introverted feeling

5) Extroverted sensing

6) Extroverted Intuitive

7) Introverted sensing

8) Introverted Intuitive

When we add secondary function to these types (as i MBTI test) we get final number of 16 types

Carl Jung (1875-1961), Swiss psychiatrist, was the father of analytical psychology. Jung thought that people share collective unconscious, appearing archetype, including mythology, and symbols and patterns that appear in dreams. He also theorized that there is a female element in the unconscious of men -- the anima -- and a male element in the unconscious of women -- the animus. Jung believed that extroversion and introversion with four functions (thinking, feeling, sensing and intuition) were integral in the study of personality types. The aim of individuation is wholeness, through the integration of unconscious forces and motivations underlying human behavior. During it, the human "I" (Ego) deals with Persona in conscious, and faces the Shadow, Anima/Animus and Self archetype in unconscious.

Jung was fond of saying that personality types often change throughout ones life. So an answer to your question will be more or less inaccurate, depending upon which part of his life is under consideration.

Jung essentially dodges the question, but he gives these clues:

-he was always a thinker (so T, not F), and adds that he had difficulty with feeling

-he had a great deal of intuition (so N, not S)

-his relation to reality was "not particularly brilliant"

He does not strike me as an extroverted type, so I'm going with I, not E.

So now we have INT_?_, and I have to guess a bit at P v. J. His struggle with feeling leads me to believe that his faculties of perception (i.e. intuition) were dominant over his faculties of judgment (i.e thinking). This is because the inferior trait of the INTP is Extroverted Feeling, whereas the INTJ inferior trait is Extroverted Sensing.

So I'm going with INTP, but the guess is perhaps more of a grenade than a bullet.
