Charles 1st was executed by beheading on 30th January 1649, after the final defeat of the Royalist forces by Oliver Cromwell in the English Civil War. His execution brought an end to the war, although there was an insurrection in 1651- the Battle of Worcester, led by Charles 2nd's younger brother Pr…ince Rupert, in an attempt to regain Royalist control of at least part of England (but this, too, ended in defeat). Cromwell did not want to execute King Charles, merely to get him to accept a more limited role as a Constitutional monarch who's powers were held by a democratically elected Parliament, and to abandon his notion of 'the Divine Right of Kings' (a popular belief held by many British monarchs that they had been specially apppointed by God to rule their nation). But Charles 1st would have none of it- Cromwell would not have executed him had he consented to go into exile or to remain under house arrest, but instead, the King kept escaping from prison and returning to lead his forces into battle. In the end, the exasperated Cromwell felt that the only way of getting this to stop was to have the King put to death, although he was saddened at being forced into this action and gave him right up until the last minute to agree to change his ways.
