Edgar Allan Poe and his stepfather, John Allan, did not get along very well. Allan was extremely strict, and refused to pay for Poe's college tuition. He eventually ended up disowning Poe. This lead to Poe publishing his works and becoming famous.

Edgar Allan Poe's bitterness toward his stepfather, John Allan, strained their relationship and contributed to Poe's feelings of abandonment and instability. This tumultuous relationship likely influenced Poe's later works, often characterized by themes of loss, betrayal, and the struggle for identity. Poe's complex feelings toward his stepfather may have fueled his creativity but also added to his personal struggles and sense of inner turmoil.

Poe did not have a step father. He had a foster father, John Allan. John Allan did not want to take Poe in when he was orphaned but he did at his wife's request. Later on Poe and John Allan had disagreements about Poe's drinking and gambling in college. John Allan refused to pay Poe's gambling debts and refused to give him any more money for tuition. When Poe's foster mother died in 1829, Poe and John Allan reconciled, but withing a few years, they became estranged again, this time for good. When John Allan died, he left Poe nothing in his will.

Poe never had a step or adoptive father; John Allan was his foster father. Edgar Allan Poe and John Allan had a very complex relationship. They were two very different men. Allan never seemed to fully accept Poe because he never really wanted a foster child, and Poe probably sensed this and still desperately needed a "father" in his life. Allan was a successful businessman who probably thought Poe should be the same, but Poe was an artist who thrived on creativity. Allan likely did what he felt was best for Poe, but Poe did not always benefit from Allan's methods. Allan provided Poe an excellent education, at least until the college level, that benefitted Poe greatly in his later years. Poe wanted to attend college, but Allan evidently thought the pursuit a waste of time. Both men were very willful, stubborn if you like, and it showed increasingly as Poe grew older, which eventually led to a major falling out between the two.
