The Kingdom of France played a fundamentally invaluable role in assisting the colonial rebels. Having been recently humiliated by Great Britain in the Seven Years' War, the French were eager to exact revenge on their historical rival.

France, however, was in heavy debt at the time the American Revolution began. Thus, the French government hesitated to openly assist the colonists in combat against the British. Instead, secret back channels of communication with rebel leaders were created and a steady supply of weapons and ammunition were sent to the colonists.

As the war dragged on, the French public began to lose hope that the rebels would emerge victorious. A long string of military defeats haunted the colonists, while British defeats were few and far between.

However, at Saratoga in 1777, the British were defeated in battle and the colonists also scored a major diplomatic victory. The rebel upset over the British at Saratoga encouraged the French to finally enter in a formal military alliance with the colonists. Later, Spain also joined its French ally while Portugal, Great Britain's ancient ally, declared neutrality.

France would soon begin sending troops and warships to aid the colonists while Spain would cause distractions elsewhere in Britain's other colonies.
