The effort to create a French Colony in Indochina began during the reign of Louis XVI. It had two important roots, the first was religion and the desire to bring this heathen people into the Catholic Church. The second was trade or the lust for monetary gain. After the conclusion of the Franco Chinese War of 1884-85 the French had a firm footing in the area and were well established until the Japanese invaded in 1941. The French sought to regain their colony in 1945 and met resistance in the northern areas. With the fall at Dien Bin Phu in 1954, the colonial aspirations of the French was ended in Indochina.
