No, he was never required to do that. He just had to cease publication and talking about the Sun centered Theory of the universe and repudiate his previous works on the topic as being in error. He was never required to change any religious views. He was always considered by the church as a Catholic, just one that had deviated into publishing topics on science unapproved and at the time prohibited by the Catholic church.
He continued doing scientific studies on other topics, but became more careful what he published after that to stay within guidelines.
