John Newton got some early religious instruction from his mother, who had died when he was a child, he had long since given up any religious convictions. However, on a homeward voyage, while he was attempting to steer the ship through a violent storm, he experienced what he was to refer to later as his "great deliverance." He recorded in his journal that when all seemed lost and the ship would surely sink. Later in his cabin he reflected and began to believe that God had addressed him through the storm and that grace had begun to work for him

No, he was never required to do that. He just had to cease publication and talking about the Sun centered Theory of the universe and repudiate his previous works on the topic as being in error. He was never required to change any religious views. He was always considered by the church as a Catholic, just one that had deviated into publishing topics on science unapproved and at the time prohibited by the Catholic church.

He continued doing scientific studies on other topics, but became more careful what he published after that to stay within guidelines.
