Ganesha (or lord Ganesh) is pictured with 4 arms, as many gods are in Hindu religion, because it is thought that a god cannot fit into a normal human body. In some pictures, I have even seen Ganesh with 6, 8 or even 10 arms.

1.It is a symbolic reason. Lord Ganesha's hands represent power. Hand is basicly a tool for all human being. It is the most unique form of tool which allow us to do a lot of work and daily activity. Basicly lord ganesha or shall i say most of hindhu god do have more than two hands which represent power. The more hand the certain god has the more powerfull They are.

You can notice that certain Hindu god have 18 hands(maahishasoora marthinie) Lord Durga's incarnation to defect a very mighty devil(asurar). the basic idea is to represent the hand as power and mightyness.

2.This is a more simpler reason. The items in his hand lord ganesha hands also have their own symbolic reason

i )broken trunk, in his lower-left hand represent there should not be any obstacle in learning.

ii)axe in one upper arm is a weapon which is used to separate bad from his devotee.

iii)noose in the other upper arm is to guide his devotee from the wrong path in life

iv)lower right hand shows a symbol of blessing(Abaya Kaaram).

p/s The items in Lord Ganesha hands may vary as his incarnation are.
