Zeus savored him so gave him the responsibility
Hermes was the messenger god
Hermes may have had many powers that were not even written about by the ancient Greeks. After all, he could fly, he could make himself invisible, and with his staff he could charm animals and possibly humans to sleep. He could come and go to anywhere he wanted. He was associated with possible magical powers because of these abilities. You can read about his adventures in "Hermes the Olympian" , a book by David Rosser available on Amazon.com.
hermes powers
If you want to believe Hermes the Olympian was more than just a character from a fairy tale, then he had more abilities and powers than all of the other so-called Greek gods. For abilities, he was blessed with wit and had a cunning streak, preferring to use his brain at a time when heroes were celebrated for their muscles and athleticism. Add the special powers he was given to him by his Father Zeus, and you will see that Hermes was a veritable super-man. His sandals enabled him to fly. His helmet (stolen from Hades) made him invisible. His staff or Caduceus made it possible for him to put animals (and people) to sleep. You can see why I chose him as the protagonist for my story about him: "Hermes the Olympian" is the first book in the "Trismegistus" trilogy, now available on Amazon, if you want to find out more about this special hero.
he had a caduceus. which he used in combat. it had special powers

Hermes was the messenger god, as well as the god of thieves and travellers.
He had no special powers but he was very brave and heroic. He did although get presents while on his journeys that gave him magical abilities. He got a invisibility helm from nymphs a sheild from Athena the goddess of wisdom and a sword and flying shoes from the god Hermes the god of travelers, communication, and thieves.
I don't know about "powers" but Hermes was the god of trade I think
