It is unknown what spell Bellatrix used in the book but it wasn't the killing curse, it was just something that made Sirius fall back into the veil. Had it been the killing curse Harry wouldn't have thought he would come out the other side alive.
In the film they changed his death and he was hit with the killing curse then fell through the veil.

∙ 13y agoHermione uses her time turner to go back in time to save Sirius Black from being killed by the dementors. Before that, Harry tried to save Sirius by casting a patronus charm (Expecto Patronum) and Hermione tried to help, too, but passed out.
