On May 13, 1972, in Los Angeles, California, Dan Blocker died of a pulmonary embolism following gall bladder surgery. The writers of Bonanza took the then-unusual step of referencing a major character's death in the show's storyline that autumn. So what that means is that when he died, on the show instead of recasting him, they said he also died on the show. It was later told to his long lost son Josh, that he died in an accident trying to Ford a river.

The title of that Bonanza episode was "Hoss and the Leprechauns".
Hoss and the Leprechauns
That was The Duke, season 2, episode 25.
Hoss Cartwright, played by Dan Blocker, was written off "Bonanza" after Blocker's untimely death in 1972. The show creators decided to address his absence by having Hoss die in a mining accident. In the episode titled "The Last Hunt," his character's fate is revealed, and the family mourns his loss, allowing for a poignant farewell to the beloved character.

Yes
Dan Blocker, who played Hoss Cartwright on "Bonanza," was written off the show following his death in 1972 due to complications from surgery. The show's producers decided to address his absence by having Hoss die off-screen, with the character's death mentioned in the first episode of the show's 14th season. This approach allowed the series to respect Blocker's legacy while continuing with the remaining cast. The storyline focused on the family's grief and adjustment to Hoss's loss.
