Well as far as i know, it is mainly through the willingness of his disciples, that witnessed his death and resurrection, to die for what they saw with their own eyes. Either they were crazy or they truly believed he was brought back to life, as they faced severe persecution and death for spreading the news of Jesus. You might check out a book called "More than a Carpenter" by Josh Mcdowell, because he does a much better job of telling it than i do.
Jesus gained followers through positive interpersonal interactions. But there are followers and then there are followers. Most of the followers in His inner circle were personally asked by Him to be His followers. Some had brothers whom they brought along and were included in the inner circle. Further out, you had supporters who gave of their substance to support what He was doing. These were mostly women. Some are mentioned in the account of the resurrection. They had personal interactions with Him that provoked them to follow Him. Further still were people who believed He was God, but their religious and political positions wouldn't allow them to "come out of the closet." These were people like the Rabbis Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. Nicodemus went to Jesus under cover of darkness to ask Him questions. He came away highly persuaded, if not convinced. Jesus did not conduct His ministry in secret, nor did He run the streets shouting out His message. (He asked several people whom He healed to tell no one.) People knew He did some really nice, really miraculous stuff. Many of His followers were no doubt beneficiaries of His kindness. But many just wanted to see the show. These were the followers in the large crowds that used to throng Him. Some hung on after the show to see the Man Himself, but many left off following Him when His doctrine became difficult to receive, or the bread stopped being handed out. After all His years of ministry, and the thousands of people whose lives He touched, there were only 120 die hard followers in the upper room just 50 days after the resurrection.
Luke 2:41-52 "'Why were you searching for me?' he asked, 'Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?'"
His first recorded miracle was at a marriage feast in Cana, when his mum pointed out a need for wine.
Because he was and is the son of God, people spread the word.
