One day Jesus went up the side of a mountain near the Sea of Galilee. Jesus healed people. The blind could see. The mute could speak. The lame and crippled could walk. The people were with Jesus for three days. They were very hungry. Jesus asked His disciples, “What food do we have?” They said, “We have seven loaves of bread and a few small fish.” Jesus gave thanks to God for the food. Then Jesus broke the loaves of bread and fish. He gave them to His disciples. The disciples gave the food to all the people. Everyone ate. Seven baskets of food were left over! Then Jesus went to a village called Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to Jesus. They begged Him to heal the man. Jesus held his hand and took him outside the village. Jesus spit on the blind man’s eyes. Jesus asked him, “Do you see anything?” The man said, “I see people. The people look like trees that are walking around.” Again Jesus put His hands on the man’s eyes. The man opened his eyes, and he could see everything clearly! Then Jesus told the man to go home
Jesus helped people by healing the sick and deaf, feeding the 5,000, calming the storm ...
He released the demon within them. In other words, he cleansed their souls. He helped a blind man be able to see again. He help the men catch tons of fish. And so many more miracles.
The people he helped most were also the outcasts and poorest in society - if you were deaf, lame, blind, inflicted with leprosy etc then you automatically were poor and usually had to beg for a living. Healing them of their physical maladies was one of the most enduring thing he could do to alleviate their earthly poverty.
Jesus' reference to the poor always being with them was made in defence of the poor woman whom the disciples were berating for having wasted money on Jesus. He was not being dismissive of the poor, and included them in the preaching of his gospel. Jesus challenged others to provide for them:
Luke 18:22
Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
Luke 14
12 When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. 13But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
The gospels show Jesus as somewhat ambivalent about the suffering of the poor. He enjoined the disciples to help the poor when they could, but that "ye have the poor with you always." While the gospels say the sick and infirm were cured, the poor were offered solace, as in Matthew 11:5: "The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them."
