There are some different accounts of his death. After having his children killed with poison, he either shot his wife and then himself; or ordered an SS man to shoot them. They may also have taken poison as in addition to being shot. Their bodies were then burned with gasoline, however there was not enough gas to cremate them completely; allowing th ebodies to be identified when they were found by the Soviet Armies a few days later.
