A French Army Captain named Charles Barbier de la Serre gave him the idea when he used a special dot and dash code for the Military to use so that soldiers wouldn't get caught using a light to read a message. It was difficult for the soldiers to use and abandoned to the Royal Institution for Blind Youth where Louis Braille was. He tweaked it a bit before it became what is known as Braille today. Sadly, though, his idea wasn't used much in his lifetime when he died from tuberculosis on January 6, 1852.

Because he was "Braillient!" Hahaha Anybody? No? Okay. :(
Louis Braille developed the Braille alphabet over a period of several years, starting when he was a teenager. He began working on it in 1821 at the age of 15 and continued refining it until he published his first Braille book in 1829. So, it took him around 8 years to develop the Braille alphabet.
Louis Braille (as he was called) created a system where each letter of the alphabet was represented by a number of (maximum: 6) dots. For making those dots he originally used a stitching awl.
