Montana has been called the treasure state because of its extensive mineral reserves. In fact, it was the foremost producer of gold, silver, and copper treasure around the 1880s. The state's motto is Oro y Plata, Spanish for "Gold and Silver." Butte, Montana is famous today for being the largest and most notorious copper boomtowns in the West. Copper was especially valuable at the time it was discovered in Montana because it was so useful to powering electricity. This small town became known as the richest hill on earth, growing to become one of the most prosperous cities around in the years of World War I. It also became a town of dissolution, brothel houses, and beer. Today, Butte keeps its reputation as the only city in the entire U.S. where alcohol is allowed openly in the streets (although not allowed in cars driving through the town).
