Bonaparte led a coup in 1799 against the French republic's constitutional government, and he (along with two other coup leaders) declared themselves the consuls to the government. Then in 1804 Bonaparte's police discovered an assassination plot against him. Bonaparte executed the Duke of Enghien (after blaming the coup on him, which the duke had nothing to do with). Napoleon then used the coup to justify the return the French government to a hereditary monarchy. He of course named himself as emperor. If you hadn't noticed this is quite similar to the revenge of the sith (Star Wars) in which Palpatine seizes power in the galactic senate after changing it to an empire (blaming the Jedi's assassination attempt upon him). This is not a coincidence as George Lucas is an avid fan of history.

By birthright. His Grandfather, Louis XV had had a son, dauphin Louis-Ferdinand who was the original new King to be, as soon as Louis XV would die.

Louis Ferdinand on his turn also had a son, Louis-Auguste, who would be king as soon as Louis Ferdinand died. But, Louis Ferdinand died before Louis XV did, and his little son Louis Auguste was only eleven. Which made Louis Auguste the new dauphin (crownprince) of France and became King when Louis XV eventually died. He became King when he was 19.

He was never King of France, since during the French Revolution France was no longer a monarchy. He committed a coup and crowned himself Emperor of France, making it into an empire.
