Oregon became U.S. territory under the Oregon Treaty in 1846, and a territorial government was created by Congress in 1849. In 1857, voters passed a state constitution, which was submitted to Congress. Congress admitted Oregon to the union as the 33rd state on February 14, 1859.
It became part of the United States in 1846 when Congress ratified the agreement with Britain to divide Oregon Country in half. The line that divides Oregon Country is the border line between America and Canada.
The Oregon Territory stretched from the Pacific coast to the Rocky Mountains, including present-day Oregon, Washington, and most of British Columbia. Spain, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States claimed the territory. In 1819, Spain ceded its claims to the territory to the United States. The U.S. claim was based on the explorations of Lewis and Clark and on the establishment of trading posts set up by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company, such as Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River. Great Britain based its claim, in part, on James Cook's exploration of the Columbia River.

Oregon became a territory in 1848, with Oregon City, as the capital. The capital was moved to Salem in 1850. Oregon's present boundaries were drawn in 1853, when Congress created what was known as the Washington Territory.
The main thing that pushed Oregon into statehood was, "The Donation Land Law of 1850." This helped in both territorial growth and development.
This law provided that any male American citizen over the age of 18, who settled in Oregon before December 1850, could receive 320 acres of land. His wife could also receive 320 acres of her own.
To qualify for ownership, a man had to cultivate his claim for four years. From December 1850 to December of 1855, a settler had to 21 years of age to receive land, and he only got 160 acres of land. A settler's wife could receive the same amount.

Four nations claimed Oregon Country at one time: Spain, Russia, Britain, and the US. Spain dropped out of America with the Florida Treaty of 1819 and Russia dropped out with the treaties of 1824 and 1825.
Peacefully defined by the Oregon Treaty in 1846, the Oregon Territory became officially organized in 1848. The Donation Land Claim Act of 1850 and the forced relocation of natives helped to increase the overall population. February 14, 1859 brought the states' admission to the Union.
