Prometheus was a titan who stole fire from Zeus, and gave it to mankind. Zeus punished him by tying him to a rock where every day an eagle fed on his liver, which grew back each night making the pain unending until Hercules rescued him.

Aside from being the mythological creator of Man, he also gave man the gift of fire, which he stole from Hēphaistos, and the gift of the arts (this means the knowledge of how to make tools from metal, stone, wood, etc.), which he stole from Athēna. For this he payed a heavy price, he was condemned by Zeus to be chained to a rock and have his liver being eaten each day by an eagle, which would always grow back as he was immortal. This lasted until Hēraklēs set him free.

Of course, this is just one version of the tale. Another says that the gods gave Promethues and his brother leave to create all the life on earth, and gave them a multitude of gifts to grant them. Epimetheus was a little too giving, though, and when the time came to give a gift to mankind, there were none left. Knowing that man was to be the foremost of all the creations, Prometheus made him walk upright, like the gods, and gave him the gift of fire, to separate him from the other animals. When the time came for the gods to make themselves known to man, Prometheus coached his children on how to offer sacrifice to the gods. They gave two offerings to zeus: choice cuts of meat wrapped in a bull's stomach; and bones, grizzle and inedible bits wrapped in succulent fat (something delicious, but unappetizing, compared to something that looks delicious, but is basically inedible). Zeus, outraged at having been outsmarted by man punished him by taking away the gift of fire. Prometheus, aching at seeing his creations suffer for his mistake, stole fire from the gods and gave it back to man, thus sealing his fate. Since man learned to make fire on his own, Zeus devised another way to punish men; the introduction of women, in the form of Pandora.
