Two brothers, Clymer and Philip Ferese were both employed by the Punxsutawney newspaper in the late 1800s. Clymer was a writer, and his brother Philip worked on the printing press.
Clymer was asked by the chief editor to publish an article about the local festival in which a groundhog could predict the remaining length of winter.
Upon submitting this article, Clymer was asked by the chief editor to somehow personify the groundhog. Perhaps giving it a name would help people remember the annual celebration, thereby bringing tourism to the struggling town.
As a joke, Clymer named the groundhog after his buck-toothed brother, Philip. The name stuck, and the rest is metoroligical history.
It is Phil that is the name of the 1st groundhog.
