Russia's premier in the early 1960s proclaimed that the Russians would 'bury' the US - it was assumed that he meant literally "bury" by the use of nuclear missiles. A few missiles could wipe out the entire United States . . . that was a real fear, and is why the US was afraid of Russia (USSR, actually) having nuclear weapons.
