How did Slovakia come to be?

Slovakia emerged as an independent nation following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, a process known as the Velvet Divorce. Historical roots trace back to the Great Moravian Empire in the 9th century, but modern Slovak identity began to form in the 19th century during the rise of nationalism. After World War I, Slovakia became part of Czechoslovakia, but political and cultural tensions persisted. Ultimately, the peaceful split allowed Slovakia to establish itself as a separate state on January 1, 1993.
