The last photo shows him writing his memoirs, which he did reluctantly, to provide for his family. He managed to complete them just days before his death. (Like Sherman's, they were better than expected from someone who did not look as though he would write a good book.)

Grant was knows for his drinking, but died of throat cancer. Whether or not drinking caused his cancer will never be known, but it is a common precursor of that type of carcinoma.
