How did ancient civilization adapted to their envirorment?

Many ancient civilizations adapted from one another, learning and progressing from those of the past. They would take the already utilized adaptations and improve upon many aspects of their lives.

Developing terrace farming on hillsides. Basically developing land and manipulating land in order to better adapt to their surroundings.

I think they made roads to get around easier. They maybe cut down trees to build villages that's all i can think of so for now.
