Armadillos evolved about 50 million years ago in what is now South America. Over the ages they have slowly moved northward and entered the United States back in the 19th century. They are slowly increasing their range in the United States. They will probably not move much further north as it is too cold for them in the winter and they will probably avoid the desert southwest because it is so hot and dry and offers little food.
