"Sasquatch" and "Saskatchewan" are actually unrelated terms, with "Sakatchewan" being derived from a Cree name for a river. However, the large number of sightings and generally ideal environment for the animal in Saskatchewan have earned it the nickname "Sasquatchewan".
Really the two are totally unrelated. Bigfoot came from a series of articles that were run in the Humboldt times in 1958 after a construction worker, Jerry Crew reported seeing large footprints. The story ran and the media used the name Bigfoot to describe the creature that made the footprints. The name stuck.
Prior to then the Indians described a creature named Sasquatch or Hairy beast.
