How did bulldogs first get their name?

Bulldogs were used for bull baiting. Bulls were thought to taste better if they were baited before being butchered and some found it as a form of entertainment. Usually, the dog would grab the bull by the nose and not let go to madden it. The bulldogs face and body were specially developed to help them bait bulls; their smushed-in face allowed them to breath while their undershot jaw clasped the nose of the bull thus forming a vice grip. The bulldog's body was bred to be low to the ground to help them avoid getting snagged by one of the bulls horns and all their face wrinkles allowed the bulls blood to drain off off their face which kept most of it out of the dogs nose and eyes. The bulldog has a small rear so that if the dog was flung off the bulls nose the damage would be minimized.

Back in medieval Europe the sport of bullbaiting (having dogs take down a bull for slaughter) became quite popular. Dog breeders sought to improve a dogs ability to do so by designing them to have certain traits that would benefit them in the ring. The dog was to have a short snout (which enable it to breath while biting the bulls nose), a strong under-bite (that made it hard for the dog to get thrown off the bull once it gained a grip), they must to low to the ground (in an effort to Dodge the bull's horns), and must have plenty of wrinkles which served two purposes (the first to channel blood from the bull away from the dogs nose, mouth, and eyes, and for any horns to rather than impale the dog catch the loose skin on its body). If you add all these traits up you get the ultimate bullbaiting dog. Therefore there is no other, more appropriate name for these dogs than "Bull"dogs; pertaining to their ability to bait bulls.

Bulldogs got their names because they used to fight actual bulls. At first people where scared of the dogs because they where mean from fighting the bulls. Later people trained the bulldogs to be nice dogs. That's how bulldogs got their name. Bull (from fighting bulls) + dog (they are dogs) = bulldog
