It brought great hardship and death, because there was a lack of water for drinking and to grow crops and cause famine. In modern times for Egypt this has been elevated by the Aswan High dam, more recently, drought during the 1980s led to widespread starvation in Ethiopia and Sudan.

When it is about mid- day, the sun is at its hottest and people can suffer from heat stroke. Stores and shops close before mid-day to go home.
