As most are aware Bill Basie was stranded in Kansas City when the early demise of Bennie Moten occurred. Basie took over the leadership of the nucleus of the Moten band shortly thereafter. At the Cherry Club in KC Basie carried on the established KC big band sound that had been nurtured by Moten's group and others indigenous to the area. This included emphasis on the sax section especially the tenorman and the so called 'head arrangements' where the entire ensemble played as a coordinated unit without the arrangement written on sheet music. His style was centered on the rhythm section and the beat driven by the drummer. Along with the Count's economy of notes at the keyboard the Basie band jazz sound was born.

My Grandfather used to play drums with Basie, way early before Basie was Count Basie.

My Grandfather's story was:

Basie was a bit jealous when Ellington changed his name to Duke Ellington. Basie said "well if he is going to be a Duke, then I'm going to be a Count.

That was my grandfathers story. When my Grandfather retired and sold his company, there was a party for him. Count Basie and his Orchestra played at that party. Basie first played a private set for only my Grandpa. The rest of us partied in another room at the Country Club. After the set, everyone attending the party was let in to the Ballroom for the next sets. I was a the party. It was in 1979. I was a senior in high school.
