The artwork is an oil painting, as to da Vinci's method of creating the work only those who were there could testify to what his method was. As a trained artist he most likely would have made several sketches to work out compisition, etc. The painting is a portrait, so da Vinci was painting while the model was present, and at other times he worked on the painting in his studio. It is said that he never really finished the painting.
