Dorthea Dix was the driving force behind the creation of hospitals for the mentally ill. In these mental institutions they patients were given treatment and care that they were not afforded before.

Dorthea Dix who had campaigned for the rights of the mentally ill, volunteered after the shelling of Fort Sumter. She supervised all the female nurses for the union (North) forces.

After a visit to a Massachusetts prison and seeing on the conditions she spent the next 40 years of her life working to improve life for the criminally insane. She got legislators in the US/Canada to establish mental hospitals for the insane and her efforts led to the building of 32 hospitals in the US.
