He initiated a new form of combat - attacking the civilian infrastructure that supported the Confederate armies in the field, soon leaving the enemy troops barefoot and starving.

This involved a lot of official vandalism that looked cruel and sadistic, but assaults on the person were strictly forbidden, and these were mostly carried out by marauders who were not Sherman's troops, but just rode alongside the army for the fun of it.

His own personal reputation for brutality probably had something to do wth his savage appearance, abrupt manner, and history of temporary insanity.

The bottom line is that he shortened the war by many months at a minimal cost in casualties.

What are some differences between north and South Carolina and Virginia?

They are different because of their spelling, and the amount of toilet paper. They are best friend on Barney.net/ (NEW RESPONDENT) South Carolina was the first state to secede. North Carolina opposed secession, and Virginia looked as though it would too. But secessionist feeling began to spread in Virginia, and after the attack on Fort Sumter, it voted Confederate. This left North Carolina totally surrounded by Confederate states, so it reluctantly seceded too. When Sherman came up from Georgia in February 1865, he punished South Carolina harshly for having started the war, but told his men to treat North Carolina leniently, as that state was less guilty.
