They have shields to protect themselves when someone swings their sword at them. Say you just used a bunch of energy in your right arm, trying to swing at someone and missed, then they swing right after. You don't have the time or energy to get your sword up fast enough to block the sword coming at you, so you use your other hand and arm holding the shield, put that where the sword is headed, and you don't get hit, you just blocked it.
