Heavily forested, rocky terrain with short growing seasons and arduous winters. All of which required that people buy themselves immediately with building a house strong enough to withstand winter and then stock up on fire wood and food stores to get them through those winters. With the shorter growing seasons, major farming as seen in the south) never really came to fruition. Hunting and fishing were/are big.
