The first and original Ku Klux Klan was formed in Spring 1866 in a law office in Pulaski, Tennessee. The original founders were 6 confederate veterans of the Civil War. Upon return to their home town of Pulaski, they found life boring compared to wartime life. They organized to form some kind of social group that could amuse them. They called themselves the Ku Klux Klan because of the word "kuklos", which means "the circle" in Greek. Klan was added as they are all of Scottish/Irish background. The group had no real point, it was just a source of amusement!!! One night the six founders were inspired by the "mystical" name they had created, they raided an old ladies linen cupboard, draped cloths over themselves, and pulled pillowcases over their heads. They then ran around the town yelling and screaming.REMEMBER: the original and first Ku Klux Klan was just a source of amusement. There is significant evidence to suggest that the residents of Pulaski, even enjoyed the pranks as it gave them something to look forward to. It was only later that the Klan became extremest and violent. If you want more info on this I suggest you read "The Fiery Cross" by Wyn Craig Wade. It helped me a lot and it has lots of useful info.Hope this helped :-)
