Fashions in hairstyles changed considerably during the very long medieval period.
In the 12th century, most women wore their hair very long, parted in the middle and woven into two long plaits - these could almost reach the ground and were sometimes "helped" by introducing extra human or horsehair into the plaits. It was said at the time that all women looked alike because of this fashion.
In the 13th century, the same long hair was often plaited and tied up in knots each side of the face; by the 14th century wealthy women had much more elaborate hairstyles with long hair still frequently arranged close to the head.
In the late 14th century women started to shave the forehead, giving them a very high hairline at the front, a style that continued into the 15th century.
At all periods it was common for the female hair to be concealed beneath various types of veil, barbette, henin, hood or other headgear; only very young girls would have their hair fully uncovered.

Most commoners and nobles shoulder-long but monks and knights short like men today. Most knights wore it short like their beards not to stick out of their helmets to get pulled in fighting.
