They went into bomb proof basements and shelters. They also did black outs, which meant that the threatening air pilots couldn't see where they were trying to bomb. Britain had sirens which were triggered by the movements in the air to tell the people that they were about to be attacked from the sky and to get ready and safe. Many sandbags were used to protect old buldings and monuments.
