Plesiosaurs became extinct 65.5 million years ago, probably for the same reason the dinosaurs died out. The generally excepted theory is that an asteroid, 6 miles in diameter, crashed into the Yucatan Peninsula and threw dust into the atmosphere. The dust layer blocked the sun for months, killing plants and plankton. This meant that herbivores had nothing to eat, and died, leaving the carnivores with nothing to eat and they soon died, too. There are other theories as well, and you can check out the related link to read about those.
It is most likely that they were hunted by other animals or our early ancestors. They had thick skin so they may also have been hunted for their skin. I am not sure....correct me if I am wrong.
There's at least a possiblity that we killed them all. They were large (lots of meat), slow-moving (they were sloths, after all) and though they came equipped with formidable claws, these weren't much deterence to a hunter with a projectile weapon, as a throwing spear tipped with the Clovis Point (the original weapon of mass destruction).
The debate on whether or not humans exterminated these giant creatures hinges on when man first arrived in the Americas.
