Most people were shocked and outraged by the Watergate scandal, as it revealed deep corruption at the highest levels of government. Public trust in political institutions plummeted, leading to widespread disillusionment with the presidency and the political system. Many citizens demanded accountability and transparency, culminating in President Nixon's resignation in 1974. The scandal also sparked greater media scrutiny and a more skeptical public attitude toward government officials.
The public was repulsed by Nixon's language in the transcripts.
He grew an afro and wore a few tie die shirts with a peace necklace
When Watergate first happened the true importance of what happened wasn't known by people. It seemed that 4 men broke into the office and there was no evidence as to how far up the chain of command the scandal went. Information came out bit by bit and little by little. The world reaction was worse. I was living in Germany at the time and saw the price of gold fall which meant my dollar went from 3.50 marks per dollar to 1.50 per dollar almost over night. After it was understood what Nixon had done and his part he was forced to resign and Ford replaced him. Some of the problems today in Congress and the Executive branch are a result of Watergate. I think the worse effect of Watergate was the psychological damage. Trust was lost between the government and the people and more people became hardened against the government.
People did not react at all because they did not know about the stroke.

President Wilson was not happy about the sinking of Lusitania but did nothing. This is because President Wilson knew that it was carrying munitions.
Congressional investigations are typically used to promote the political agenda of the party controlling the investigation. In many if not most cases, issues that have been the focus of congressional investigations were promoted by hyperbolic commentary from the party in opposition to the subject of the investigation. These investigations are often used by the controlling party as a political weapon to help divert attention of the public from more important issues, or as an attempt to persuade voters to react in favor to an issue of interest to the investigation controlling party.
