Tigerclaw killed Redtail in a battle at Sunningrocks by the Thunderpath. Tigerclaw was attempting to prove his loyalty to ThunderClan by helping defend the territory.

Tigerclaw wanted to become deputy, then leader, so he murdered Redtail to try and acheive. He lied about it. But then Lionheart was made deputy but died in a battle with ShadowClan. Then Tigerclaw became deputy.
